In retrospect i wish I had tried going farther back in time with Norton GoBack before disabling it which deletes all the backup points. NOTE: If you used a Windows XP CD that already contained Service Pack 2 in the steps above, you may skip this step. There is a (possibly corrupt) userinit.exe in the HD's sytem32 folder. Tonight I will try and copy it from the CD to the SYSTEM32 folder. I don't have that same problem, but a bootable CD (besides my XP CD) might come in handy, so I followed the directions, even added userinit.exe because I know about that Replacing the userinit.exe from CD is not neccessary in this case. Maybe a good SP2 one is better than a corrupt SP3 one but there maybe compatibility issues.... If you want to uncompress it, use expand.exe: (2) expand E:\I386\userinit.ex_ c:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe This will uncompress the file from your CD and replace the existing userinit.exe. All is well and I am reinstalling Office, my anti-virus software, printer, Yahoo and running updates for those. After entering "EXPAND USERINIT.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32" you should see the text "1 file(s) copied", in which case all went well. Now this is DOS so there could be a question to that effect on the command line.

I'm not sure where the userinit.exe (or userinit.ex_) file is on a Dell CD, browse the CD with another computer to see where it's located (should be in the i386 folder) BLEEPINGCOMPUTER NEEDS YOUR HELP! while trying to remove viruses, the "userinit" file was deleted.
